Sorry! Spongebob Squarepants and Disney

In my household, we’ve turned the classic childhood game of Sorry! into heated, competitive “tournaments.” Someone is constantly complaining about conspiracies, as if there was such a thing and at least once per game, a recount of spaces moved has been demanded. Anyhow, about five years ago – we had a special edition Pokemon board that we paid $5 for at Walmart. The normal cards offered a bit more variety. For instance, the ’3′ card in your designated color granted you an immediate trip to “home base.”
This past Christmas, I wanted to rekindle the same fun we had with the Pokemon Sorry!, so we purchased the Special Edition Sorry! Spongebob Squarepants. To my dismay, I found the artistic appearance of the game board and cards a complete distraction. I wish I could say the game would make a cool gift for younger Sorry enthusiasts, but no…they will probably spend more time reading the cards and trying to figure out what they mean instead of getting into the game. From a graphic design point-of-view, there’s too much white space used in the cards, which makes reading the instructions even more of a headache.
Around the same time, I purchased Special Edition Sorry! Disney from eBay and it was a complete hit with the family. Simple, easy-to-follow, and fun with pleasantly inviting board graphics. After Christmas, we abandoned the cutesy Disney cardboard characters and opted to use the hard plastic game pieces. No matter what special board we’ve used, those cardboard pieces have a mind of their own and constantly slip out of their plastic grooves.
In conclusion:
Yay for Disney Sorry.
Nay for Spongebob Sorry.
