I Learned Today…Tomatoes
Posted on Sunday, February 14th, 2010
So, I decided to use an assortment of ingredients found in my refrigerator to create an impromptu salad. As I gathered a cucumber, two apples, carrot, green onions, and tomato – I noticed on the package of tomatoes that it said “do not refrigerate.” I never noticed that before. I called up my father to ask him what it meant and he asked me if the tomatoes were packaged in Styrofoam. I answered ‘yes’ and then he went on to scare me right out of using my tomatoes.
However, I was determined not to waste food, so I did a little Internet research. Apparently, if you refrigerate tomatoes – they immediately lose their flavor and texture, which explains why they were hard as rocks, I guess. I’m amazed I’ve never heard of this before.
Well, to make a semi-long story short – I used the tomatoes in the salad, which tasted spectacular with light Asian Toasted Sesame Dressing. Yes, the tomatoes lacked a full burst of flavor, but I’ll live.
